Does the Great American Smokeout help smokers stop smoking in 2008?

November 18th, 2008

Cold turkey was the only method available when Arthur Mullaney decided to quit smoking cold turkey and create The Great American Smokeout. Cold turkey isn’t usually a permanent solution because it takes twenty one days to change a habit.

I think that the Great American Smokeout should be updated by renaming it The Great American Easeout. Smoking is a multifaceted habit.

To stop smoking permanently you need to
-change your behaviors
-routines
-learn how to cope with stress in a different way
-learn how to deal with emotions
-detoxify yourself from the nicotine so your body has time to adjust
-change your attitude about the process of quitting so you won’t feel deprived
-this all needs to be done while you are smoking because it takes 21 days to change a habit

Nowadays many of the smoking cessation methods are still cold turkey and most of the them only address one aspect of the habit.

The physical cold turkey approaches are acupuncture, nicotine gum, lozenges, nasal spray and patches.
Using nicotine replacement to stop smoking would be like me saying that I am going to stop drinking white wine, but I am going to go on a vodka drip. Do you think I would ever stop drinking alcohol?… ha! I don’t think so.

The emotional cold turkey approaches are hypnosis, Zyban, Welbutrin and Chantix. If the smoke doesn’t kill you, the side effects will. The DOT (Department of Transportation) and the FAA (Federal Aviation Association) has banned the use of Chantix due to its side effects.
This year on November 20, 2008, if you are a smoker, why don’t you use the day to investigate and decide what method you are going to use to quit smoking rather than be forced to go cold turkey in one day.

Here is a comparison chart of the most popular methods to quit smoking.
http://www.nicotinesolutions.com/comparequitprograms.html

Choose a comprehensive program that lasts at least 21 days while you are still smoking, and also deals
with all the aspects of the smoking habit such as emotional, psychological, physical and behavioral.
Quitting with a group, having accountability and long term support are also important for permanent
success.

A “Smokin” Classroom Now Worldwide!

November 14th, 2008

San Francisco, CA - November 2, 2008 - With the help of Skype, Lela Bryan, the Chief Learning Officer of Nicotine Solutions teaches students from all over the world in her Tele Seminar. There are students from England, Bulgaria, California, Washington State, Oregon, Toronto and even The Yukon Territory in Canada!

Smokers are flocking from all over the world to attend Nicotine Solutions because of the 90% success rate that is based on behavior change rather than on drugs. Lela, who stopped smoking in 1978, says that “a smoker is a smoker no matter where they live, how old they are or what gender they are.”

At first, some smokers are reluctant to try the Tele class approach because they think they might need the in-person approach to quitting, but once smokers or chewers participate in the lively “Sneak Preview” and talk to other smokers and experience a live class, they end up acting like old war buddies at the end of the class!

Marianne Pendleton, of New York, who quit smoking 2 packs a day on July 2, 2003 said “Lela’s seminar helped me quit smoking during an especially difficult time in my life. What made this program unique was the support and comradeship provided by the group even after the program had ended. We emailed constantly and shared our stories for months after wards. Having a group of new friends going through the same experience provided a great safety net- there was always someone to commiserate with, as well as share the triumphs!”

Another student named Pat who quit smoking in 1999, said “I used to charge a lot of my cigarettes on my Texaco gas card and my gas card bill was around $250 every month. After I quit smoking, my bill went down to $49. I was shocked!” (Well those days of low gas prices are gone, but at least she is still saving money because she quit smoking.)

Tim Wedrosky, of Palm Springs, who smoked 2 packs a day said he “had exhausted every known method at the time to quit. I had tried the patch, gum, aversion therapy and Zyban. Zyban make me act angry and get road rage. Nicotine Solutions was the only thing that worked.”

Barry from Pennsylvania, who stopped smoking in 2003, said “Lela, I am free. Thanks. You made a big difference. Tell your students that they can do this. It’s like a paper wall, appears strong & intimidating, but will yield to THEIR advances. I don’t even count the days, etc. It just doesn’t matter anymore. Smoking isn’t even worth the energy it takes to add up the days on a calendar.”

Deloree Burd, of Tacoma Washington stopped smoking a pack a day said, This is so much more than a “quit smoking” program-to be able to discover the “reason” we smoked is so much more valuable than I imagined. It has been life changing & empowering. To be able to be successful in such a short period of time is amazing. I am still digesting all of the material that has been presented & will continue to do so – as my life is forever changed. Thank you, Lela!

Background information:

Lela Bryan, founder and Chief Learning Officer of Nicotine Solutions, quit smoking—happily and permanently—on June 4, 1978.  She has been successfully teaching others how to quit smoking ever since. Originally a high school teacher, Lela found her true calling when—after 16 years of smoking—she finally discovered a way to quit that actually worked.

Determined to spread the word, Lela decided to leave the school system and use her teaching skills to help people quit smoking instead. Since then, she has taught smoking cessation throughout the US, Canada and South Africa. And she continued to hone and refine her program over the years to make it as effective as possible.

Originally all of Lela’s classes took place in person. But with the advent of the Internet and Skype she saw a way to help even more people stop smoking, regain their health and realize their dreams. Today she uses a combination of telephone conferencing, email, video, and audio technologies to deliver impressive results.

Thanks to her innovative approaches, Lela’s students consistently experience the highest success rates of any system—90% of her students stop smoking by the end of the program, and 70% are still smoke-free six months later. With the Nicotine Solutions program, Lela can help anyone, anywhere quit smoking or chewing (or any other nicotine addiction) quickly and easily.

All you need is a telephone to attend.

lela_bryan.jpg  Hi, I’m Lela Bryan,

the Chief Learning Officer at Nicotine Solutions.

I quit smoking June 4, 1978 and have been teaching others how to quit smoking and chewing ever since!

What words NOT to say when you are preparing to stop smoking or chewing.

What is the difference between saying I am going to “give up” cigarettes or I got rid of them.

If you “give up” something, do you want it back? SURE.

And if you want it back will you get it back? …SURE

If you got rid of really stinky, smelly garbage do you say I “gave up” the garbage…NO!

You got rid of it! You don’t want it back.

For women, it is like getting rid of the most abusive relationship that you have ever had let’s say Osama Bin Laden.

For men, it is like getting rid of a relationship with Lorena Bobbitt! (there’s a visual for you!)

Right now you think of cigarettes as being very precious and important

to you and I know it feels like you are about to “give them up”.

But just start to say I am going to be stopping smoking. I am going to be getting rid of this habit.

You don’t have to believe it just fake it till you make it. I show you how it is done.

I like this little saying by Frank Outlaw-

Watch your thoughts; they become words.

Watch your words; they become actions.

Watch your actions; they become habits.

Watch you habits; they become character.

Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

You will learn that you not giving up anything.

You are gaining freedom, peace of mind, calmness, money, health, stamina and better breath!

But there is a lot to learn in Nicotine Solutions before you are ready to quit.

Chained to the smoking habit?

September 2nd, 2008

Does your smoking or chewing habit run your life? Does your smoking habit tell you how long you can stay at the party, control who you hang around, control what you do during the day and make you sneak around to have your cigarette?

I went on a tour of Alcatraz prison in San Francisco, CA  and I just knew that this guard named Jorg was a smoker, so my friend and I asked him if I could make a short movie of him posing in one of the cells at Alcatraz and here is the Youtube video that I made  of him in one of the cells!

What are the best & worst Airports for smokers?

August 30th, 2008

I would love to hear some stories about being a smoker and traveling these days. There are so many airports that don’t allow smoking or the smoker has to go clear out through security to smoke!

I was surprised to actually see a smoking lounge in the Atlanta airport where smokers could actually go and have something to eat and smoke.

Is Chantix the best way to quit smoking?

August 29th, 2008

I’ve been teaching people to stop smoking since I quit smoking in 1978. When Chantix first came out I questioned smokers that had tried Chantix. Some said, “it helped”, some said, “it didn’t do anything”, some said, “I would rather die than take that stuff again”.

First the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) banned pilots and air traffic controllers from taking Chantix because it was linked to seizures, dizziness, heart irregularities and suicide attempts.

My husband works for Fed-Ex and he received a corporate memo that Chantix was banned by the Department of Transportation (DOT), because Chantix had been the cause of over 100 accidents.

When you are choosing a method of stopping smoking, weigh the pros and the cons. Chantix advertises that it takes away the highs that smokers get from smoking, and when smokers quit smoking, it levels out the lows associated with stopping cold turkey. There are so many side effects of quitting cold turkey.

In the Nicotine Solutions seminar, students can take Chantix if they want to, but most realize that they don’t need it because they can learn to quit smoking by gradually changing their behaviors.

It takes 21 days to change a habit and that is the reason that smokers in Nicotine Solutions smoke for the first 6 weeks to learn how to detoxify (naturally). Unlike cold turkey methods like Chantix, smokers and chewers learn to deal with stress and emotions so when they do stop smoking with Nicotine Solutions they don’t feel like they lost their best friend or got hit by a freight train.

Chantix is new, but it is just approaches one aspect of quitting. What about the behaviors, routines, emotional attachment, rituals, first thing in the morning, last thing at night, when you are under stress and all the ways that you are hooked up to smoking mentally, physically and emotionally and psychologically.

Sometimes smokers and chewers announce that “I’ve got it all handled, I’m going on Chantix”, and then later they realize that it sometimes takes more than a pill to deal with their habit because the smoking habit has got a hold on them on so many levels.

After my Dad quit smoking he had sore gums..what can I do to help?

January 28th, 2008

I read this question on the Oprah Message board about quitting smoking. When a smoker is smoking, it is like their gums are being smoked like a fish. When the smoker stops smoking, the gums start to shed that tough “smoked” lining and the smoker gets all new baby tissue. The new baby tissue is good but it hurts and it is like when a baby is teething ..it feels uncomfortable.

What you can do if you have just quit smoking and your gums are sore is rinse with Amosan mouthwash. You can buy it in the oral hygiene section of any drug store or buy it online at Drugstore.com . You just mix the powder packet with some water and rinse and it is soothing and will heal the sore mouth.

If you have quit and you have some physical symptoms that are bothering you I can probably help you . Just post your question on my blog.

What is your biggest fear about quitting smoking?

January 28th, 2008

I read the message boards from the Oprah and Dr Oz show about quitting smoking and I would like to know what is the biggest fear you have about quitting smoking?

On Oprahs message board I read “I need a quit smoking buddy”

January 28th, 2008

On Oprah’s message board I read, “I need a buddy to stop smoking”

As I read over the message board from the Oprah and Dr. Oz TV show about stopping smoking the theme was very clear. Smokers said “I need a buddy” and the reason was that you needed accountability and support.

Smoking is a multifaceted habit that has got you emotionally, physically, psychologically, financially and behaviorally. Smoking has got you every way you turn. You smoke after a meal, first thing in the morning, last thing at night, with coffee, with alcohol and most of your cars won’t start without lighting that cigarette!

Getting a buddy is great and to learn how to quitting smoking permanently you need more than a buddy…You need to learn all about the habit and change your routines and habits.

How Did Chantix work for you 6 months after going off of Chantix?

July 1st, 2007

I teach people how to quit smoking.

I am neither for nor against Chantix, the new pill to help people quit smoking.

I could recommend this or not but I want to know what the long-range effects after someone has been off Chantix for at least 6 months. Are there any of you out there?

I really don’t know of too many people trying Chantix.

Could you reply to my blog and let me know the good and the bad so I will know what to say to my clients who ask about Chantix.

Thanks!
